What is Tempest?

Tempest is a real-time version of chess. There are no turns to hinder your pursuit of the enemy king. Move all your pieces at once, or none at all — you are limited only by time and the power of your intellect.

How does it work?

Tempest is played on a regular chess board and follows the standard chess movement rules. Pieces traverse the board over time rather than jumping immediately to their destination. Once a piece has been moved, there is a short delay before the piece can move again.

Is there actually strategy?

There is a great deal of strategy! Tempest throws conventional wisdom out the window and replaces it with a rich new set of tactics. What might be an even trade in chess can turn into a brutal massacre in Tempest. Capture pieces while simultaneously moving to defend your own, but take care not to overextend your reach — your prey might not be so cooperative!

I am terrible at chess. Will I stand a chance?

Absolutely! If you can move chess pieces, you can play Tempest. The real-time nature of Tempest requires an entirely new way of thinking, and you will quickly forget your chess woes.

What game modes are supported?

Tempest supports a wide variety of game modes and new modes are constantly under development. The current game modes are:

How much does it cost?

Does Tempest work on Mac or Linux?
